There is no fee to join the center; however, donations to the Center Enhancement Fund are always welcome. These donations stay within the center and are used to purchase items to enhance the center and offer special programs. There may also be small fees for classes and special events.

Fitness Studio

In 2009 the Essex Senior Center open its newly renovated Fitness Studio. The Fitness Studio is designed to meet the needs of mature adults age 60 and over. It is equipped with treadmills, recumbent bikes and steppers, strength training equipment and more! Membership dues are only $60 a year: a wonderful value! You are required to register as a center member, complete a fitness studio application (PDF) and attend an orientation to participate in the Fitness Studio.

Volunteers Make the Difference

Volunteers are an important part of Essex Senior Center and its operations. Volunteers contribute by working as receptionists at the front desk, serving and cooking meals, coordinating special events, leading classes, monitoring in the fitness studio and much more. To find out about available volunteer opportunities please contact the Essex Senior Center.

Center History

The Essex Senior Center evolved in 1977 from an organizational meeting, attended by interested seniors, local community leaders, and government officials. Approval was given in 1978 to use one room in the old Essex School as a gathering place for the seniors. Once the lunch program got started on February 27, 1978, the Essex Senior Center was officially opened. The old two-room Essex Elementary School was transformed into a 12,500 square foot senior center. Ground breaking took place on January 11, 1982 and the doors were officially opened on May 9, 1983.
