VOLUNTEERÂ AT ESSEX SENIOR CENTER
Volunteers are an important part of Essex Senior Center and its operations. Volunteers contribute by working as receptionists at the front desk, serving and cooking meals, coordinating special events, leading classes, monitoring in the fitness studio and much more.

Staff value and rely on volunteers to create a welcoming and efficient environment. Please visit the center to pick up a volunteer application if you are interested in any of the following positions. While we may not have an opening at the time of your inquiry, we'd still like to hear from you and will keep your contact information on file for when a position becomes available.
FRONT DESK RECEPTIONIST
Welcome and direct visitors; answer telephone and take messages; answer general and specific questions about the center, events and classes. Sell tickets for events. Register seniors for membership and classes. On the job training is provided. Pleasant customer service and phone skills will be rewarded with success in a friendly, people oriented environment. Select a shift between 8:30 a.m. - Noon or Noon - 4:00 p.m. Call staff for current openings. Not able to commit to a weekly shift? Become a substitute volunteer! You'll be trained in advance and we'll call you if a volunteer cannot work their shift.
EATING TOGETHER VOLUNTEER
Lunch is delivered between the hours of 10 & 11 AM and served at noon. Responsibilities include: checking food temperatures, setting out paper products and utensils, serving and light clean-up. Hours are: 10 am-12:30 pm.  On the job training provided.
SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
Do you like planning events? Consider working on our special events committee and assist the event chairperson with developing and executing a special event for the center such as a crab feast, holiday party, luncheon, etc. Experience with event planning is preferred. Skill sets needed:Â able to work well with others, working within allotted budgets, and organization. Duties include menu planning, decorating, recruiting volunteers, and purchasing supplies.
CENTER PROMOTIONS COORDINATOR
Promote the center in the surrounding community and create ongoing relations with local businesses and leaders. Individual would be responsible for identifying and scheduling speaking events for staff or self to promote the center. Deliver monthly newsletters to various points in the community. Days/times are very flexible - create your own schedule. Must have available transportation and know the Perry Hall community.
CLASS INSTRUCTOR
Instructors are needed to share their special talents by teaching seniors. Class topics will depend on the individual's talents, but could include the following: Travelogue Presentations, Current Events Discussion, Digital Camera Skills, Aerobics, Foreign Language, Book Review, Crafts, Art, Fitness, History, Religion, Sewing, World Topics, etc. Individual should be friendly and enjoy working with senior citizens. The class should be scheduled Monday-Friday between the hours of 9 am and 2 pm and can be offered on a weekly basis, bi--monthly, once a month or as a series.
TRAVEL OFFICE VOLUNTEER
We are looking for volunteers to help support our travel coordinators by staffing the Travel Office. Duties include collecting trip payments, writing receipts, answer questions about upcoming trips and answering the travel phone. We can establish office hours around your schedule. At least one day a week for three hours is requested.
FITNESS CENTER MONITOR
Has your commitment to fitness made a difference in your life? Do you want to help dozens of others stay healthy and strong? Become a Fitness Center Volunteer Monitor! If you are enthusiastic about promoting fitness and healthy living, this is a great opportunity to share your passion in a meaningful way. Our fitness center has state-of-the-art equipment and provides a unique exercise program geared specifically to adults age 60 and older. The center is equipped with treadmills, recumbent bikes and steppers, strength training circuits, flexibility and stretching stations, and free weights. We have an award-winning fitness model with proven results.
We will provide training before you begin. Shifts available between 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM or 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM Call staff for current openings. Not able to commit to a weekly shift? Become a substitute volunteer instead! You'll be trained in advance and we'll call you if a volunteer cannot work their shift.
EXECUTIVE BOARD
Consider serving on the Center Council Executive Board which is comprised of elected board members who represent the council membership and work to enhance BCDA's services and programs to older adults. As a non-profit organization, these volunteers are the leaders who can fundraise, policy makers, council budget any lists and advisory to Baltimore County Department of Aging. The Executive Board serves for a term of one year. Executive Board members are to attend the bi-monthly Council meeting (4th Monday of every other month) and monthly Executive Board meetings ( 3rd Monday of every month).
To serve on the board you must become a member of the center. The board discusses and votes on business for the center and meets on the 3rd Monday of the month. Executive board members make a one year commitment from July-June and are also required to attend bi-monthly council/membership meetings on the 4th Monday of every other month.
